Thank you for your interest in the Wilderness First Aid Course.
This course will offer you the skills and knowledge to handle
emergencies when professional help is not readily available.
In order for you to get the full benefits from this course, you
need to know what to expect and prepare for these activities.

---You will need to wear comfortable clothes that you don't mind getting dirty, since we will be doing scenarios outdoors.  Please bring clothes appropriate for the outside temperature and conditions.  Be prepared to spend up to an hour outside before lunch and an hour outside after lunch on the first day.  Be prepared to spend up to an hour outside before lunch and two hours outside after lunch on the second day.

---Be prepared to play the role of the patient and/or the rescuer in scenarios.  Everyone should get plenty of opportunity to play both roles.  As a patient, you may have the "rescuers" simulating rescue techniques such as a physical exam and emergency moves on you.  As the rescuer, you will be required to make decisions based on a set of symptoms exhibited by the "patient."  You will also get the opportunity to play the role of the Leader, who makes decisions concerning the whole scene.  All of this role playing is important to the course in that it pulls all the information together and teaches the emergency action steps in a more realistic setting.

---There will be skill practices that you must pass proficiently, and a final written examination of 25 multiple choice questions.  You must make at least 80% on the exam in order to qualify for certification.  If you do not want certification, you may declare an audit at the beginning of the class.  A person auditing the course does not have to participate in skills or scenarios or take the written exam, but the cost is the same.

---Due to the nature of the skills in this course, you will be participating in strenuous activities.  If you have a medical condition or disability or if you have any questions about your ability to participate fully in this course, discuss them with your physician or health-care provider and the instructor before you start the course.  Upon successful completion of this course, you will receive an American Red Cross Adult CPR and Wilderness and Remote First Aid certificate.  The Adult CPR and Wilderness and Remote First Aid certificate, which includes Basic First Aid, is valid for 2 years.
